Kishore K Swamy got arrested on Monday, after Tamil Nadu Women Journalists Forum filed a complaint in July 2019 against him. He is an avid AIADMK and BJP supporter on social media, and claims he is a “political analyst.” One of the complainants has written on Twitter previously on how he was engaged and supported by various BJP IT Cell members.
Chennai, Oct 1: Following the continuous complaints by women journalists, self-proclaimed 'political analyst', Kishore K Swamy was arrested by the Cyber Crime wing of Chennai Police.
The Tamil Nadu Women Journalists Forum stated that Swamy used to post obscenities regarding them on Twitter. Additionally, he has been accused by three other women who claimed that he indulged in their character assassination and tried to incite particular religious sects against them.
The accused Swamy is notable for being a popular AIADMK and a BJP supporter. Taking action on the complaints, Chennai police booked him under sections 354D (stalking), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC and section 4 (Harassment of Women) of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act, 1998.
Jaya Bathuri, the coordinator of TN Women Journalists Forum, alleged that upon approaching the police with complaints against Swamy, the Commissioner himself assured strict actions against him.
Swamy is notorious for shifting his loyalty from one party to other from AIADMK to Sasikala Loyalist to BJP. He uploads tweets and Facebook posts in favour of the parties he supports. However, AIADMK has discarded Swamy's association with them.
Although Kishore K Swamy has been touted as an 'expert guest' by English news channels, they also have complained of harassment from him. There even have been accusations from some of the men against him.
Sonia Arunkumar of the TN Women Journalists Forum called Swamy a repeat offender who needs to be stopped. Further, she believes that people who support him and his views need to discourage him rather the other way around. “For instance, at present, if you check it is the BJP supporters who are giving more mileage to his tweets and propagating it. This emboldens him. As a party, they could have at least desisted from encouraging him or giving him any kind of validation. His posts have given young women journalists, who are new to the field, immense mental agony,” she added.

According to the letter issued by Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI), Kavin Malar, a journalist with India Today, has been subjected to character assassination and abusive messages on Facebook for over a month by one Mr Kishore K Swamy. The letter states that Swamy, a self-proclaimed AIADMK supporter, is “repeatedly posting abusive messages on Facebook targeting Kavin Malar’s professional work, her personal character and wilfully attempting to malign her reputation in society as well as in the media.”

The letter alleges that the Chennai police has not taken any action on the complaint filed on May 13, 2013, beyond calling Kavin for an enquiry.

Kavin told FeminsitsIndia that she suspects Swamy has chosen to target her primarily because she is a woman and also because she has written often on Dalit issues. According to Kavin, the abuse began soon after her visit to Marakkanam, a small town near Chennai to report on an incident of caste violence that took place in April this year. Soon after, Swamy began posting abusive comments against her on his Facebook wall. Swamy alleged that Kavin used a criminal’s vehicle to travel to Marakkanam and then went to a nearby luxurious bungalow to have sex and smoke cannabis.Kishore K Swamy Twitter Accounts
“This man writes that I have connection with a criminal, whose name I have not even heard before. He accuses me of traveling to Marakkanam in this criminal’s car. Is India Today not capable of arranging a cab to its employee? He is writing almost daily about me in obscene language. These abuses are too personal and he is intruding into my personal life,” says Kavin.
Online harassment against women is on the rise in India. Earlier this year, in April, activist Kavita Krishnan was threatened with rape during a discussion on the anti-rape movement in India on an online chat forum organised by Rediff.com, a leading Indian news portal. In 2012, Meena Kandasamy, a young poet, was subjected to a violent hate campaign on Twitter which also called for her gang rape. This was in reaction to her supporting Dalit students at a beef eating festival in Hyderabad last year.
